The algorithm induces no spatial\ndiscretization artificial diffusion\, relies on cubic and higher-degree elements for an accurate resolution\nof the steep shock gradients\, uses an implicit time integration for swift convergence to steady states\,\nand employs original Neumann-type outlet boundary conditions in the form of generalized Rankine\nHugoniot conditions on normal stress and balance of heat flux and deviatoric-stress work per unit time.\nThrough an innovative approach\, the formulation also calculates the shock extent\, which is an additional\nunknown\, and employs the single non dimensional (0\, 1) computational domain for the determination\nof any shock structure. The algorithm rapidly generates steady shock structures\, in at most 150 time\nsteps for any upstream Mach number considered in this study\, in the range 1.05 < M < 10.0. The finite\nelement discretization is shown to be asymptotically convergent under progressive grid refinements\, in\nrespect of both the H0 and H1 error norms\, with an H0 accuracy order as high as 6 and reduction of the\ndiscretization error to the round-off-error threshold of 1 x10-9 with just 420 computational cells and\n5th-degree elements. For any upstream Mach number\, the computational results are shown to satisfy the\nRankine–Hugoniot conditions\, an established requirement for solution reliability. \nMME Seminar_Flyer_Iannelli_03.01.2019 \n  URL:/event/mme-seminar-series-the-dynamics-and-thermodynamics-of-gas-dynamic-shock-waves/ LOCATION:BSEL 102 CATEGORIES:academic,Calendar, student, university ORGANIZER;CN="Changki Mo":MAILTO:changki.mo@wsu.edu END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20190306T110000 DTEND;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20190306T140000 DTSTAMP:20260613T160815 CREATED:20190301T232320Z LAST-MODIFIED:20190301T233621Z UID:64511-1551870000-1551880800@tricities.wsu.edu SUMMARY:National TRIO Day DESCRIPTION:In honor of National TRIO Day\, TRIO Student Support Services is hosting a celebration event next Wednesday March 6\, 2019.  Leading up to and at the event we will be collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the WSUTC Cougar Cupboard.  In addition\, our students have been signing up for local volunteer opportunities such as tutoring support at the Family Learning Center\, providing workshops at the Kids Engineering Day at Jeffereson Elementary\, and offering mentorship for the Dream It\, Be It conference. \n  \nOverview of National TRIO Day: \n\nOn February 24\, 1986\, a congressional resolution (H. The event starts at 5 p.m.\, March 21\, in ÎçÒ¹¾ç³¡â€™ East Auditorium. \n“These women have intense experiences\, great depth of knowledge and funny stories to share about Hanford\,†says Anna King\, who also appears on WSU’s Northwest Public Broadcasting. “Hanford is a heavy burden that we all inherit and these women’s wisdom is invaluable.†\nÎçÒ¹¾ç³¡\, WSU WiSTEM and the Women Chemist Committee of the American Chemical Society\, Richland Section\, are presenting the entertaining program together. \nDaughters is oral histories\, portraits and personal archives of women who changed the World War II plutonium production site\, and women who were changed by it. The evening’s panel discussion will feature three Daughters of Hanford: retired Washington State Ecology geologist Zelma Maine Jackson\, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Frannie Smith and retired head of Washington State Ecology’s Hanford program\, Jane Hedges. \n“Women’s contributions to the Hanford site and the Manhattan Project sites across the country\, but especially at Hanford\, are unknown\,†says Zelma Maine Jackson. “When you think of the nuclear industry you think of men\, you never think of women. But more than likely they performed 90 percent of the hard work — the laborious\, tedious\, number crunching\, dictating a letter\, making a policy come into effect — it’s always been the mental heavy load carried by women.†\nDaughters of Hanford was created in partnership with ÎçÒ¹¾ç³¡\, The REACH\, and Northwest Public Broadcasting. Daughters is a series\, a museum installation and a radio documentary. Daughters was awarded the Washington State Historical Society’s David Douglas award. \n“This won’t be a stiff lecture\, or a glum chat\,†King says about the upcoming event at ÎçÒ¹¾ç³¡. “Bring a young woman or girl and grab a seat for this entertaining evening full of dynamic sound\, surprising Northwest stories\, poignant moments and laughter.†\nDaughters gets its name from nuclear science. “Daughter products†are isotopes formed by radioactive decay of some other isotope. Daughters collaborators include: ÎçÒ¹¾ç³¡â€™s associate professor of fine arts Doug Gast\, Seattle-based photographer Kai-Huei Yau\, and newly-minted APM podcast editor Phyllis Fletcher. By gaining a clear\nunderstanding of the microstructural evolution of materials it is possible to create\nnew improved materials tailored specifically for the required task. Using the specific\nexamples of the solidification of carbides in liquid U\, hydride formation and growth in\nnuclear fuel rod claddings\, and grain boundary engineering in FCC nickel the study of\nmicrostructural evolution to improve materials will be discussed. \nBio\nJacob L. Bair was raised on a farm near Ephrata\, WA. He earned a B.S. degree in Mechanical\nEngineering with a second major in French from Washington State University in December\nof 2012\, then his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Missouri University of\nScience and Technology in December of 2016. His research has been on experimental\nand computational studies of the microstructural evolution of materials using scanning\nelectron microscopy with Electron Backscatter Diffraction\, Phase Field Modeling\, and\nMolecular Dynamics. Topics he has researched include hydrides in Zr fuel rod claddings\,\ngrain boundary migration in face centered cubic materials\, and twinning in nickel. At\nPNNL he has been involved in phase field modeling of UC formation in a liquid U melt\,\nPu Oxalate precipitation\, and a combined experimental and computational study of\nhydride embrittlement in Zr fuel rod claddings.
