This research evaluates existing paper mills and industrial sites for their potential to be retrofit into a biojet fuel biorefinery based on a multi-criteria approach that integrates GIS\, economics\, and supply chain logistics. The research is part of a broader U.S.D.A. grant project to determine the feasibility of converting forest residuals (or slash piles) into biojet fuel to promote energy security within the US and revitalize rural economies in the Pacific Northwest. \nBio – Natalie Martinkus is a licensed Civil Engineer with 11 years of experience. She has worked for private consulting firms and for Yakima County\, mainly focused on stormwater and river modeling. She went back to school to pursue a PhD after the market crash in 2010\, and will graduate this summer with a PhD in Civil Engineering. Parker Foundation Lecture - "Irradiated: How does the body respond to low doses?" DESCRIPTION:Lecture from Dr. Antone L. Brooks of the Herbert M. Parker Foundation \nIrradiated: How does the body respond to low doses? \nThe major source of information for estimating radiation risks are the human A-bomb data.  These data provide a large data base on the cancer frequency following a single radiation exposure delivered in less than one second and resulted in a sound estimate of cancer risk. To estimate risk in the low dose region a linear extrapolation from these risk numbers is use.  Since most environmental radiation exposures are to lower doses which are delivered over a long time period the use of this model has been questioned.  To provide data that will help address this question an extensive research program was initiated by the US Department of Energy.  This DOE Low Dose Radiation Research Program to evaluate the response in the low dose region used the best available molecular and cellular responses combined with new technology.   This presentation will provide an overview of the data derived from this program and discuss their implications on risk assessment.  URL:/event/herbert-m-parker-foundation-lecture-irradiated-how-does-the-body-respond-to-low-doses/ LOCATION:East Auditorium\, 2710 Crimson Way\, Richland\, WA\, 99354-1671\, United States ORGANIZER;CN="Ken Fincher":MAILTO:ken.fincher@tricity.wsu.edu END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20160407T173000 DTEND;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20160407T173000 DTSTAMP:20260630T204448 CREATED:20160401T174007Z LAST-MODIFIED:20160401T174007Z UID:1891-1460050200-1460050200@tricities.wsu.edu SUMMARY:IEEE/SWE Professional Development Event DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by IEEE WSUTC Student Chapter and Society of Women Engineers (SWE)-Eastern Washington \nAbstract: Interested in public policy? Parker Foundation Lecture by Dr. Antone L. Brooks - Irradiated: My Experience DESCRIPTION:Herbert M. Parker Foundation Lecture by Dr. Antone L. Brooks – open to the public \nIrradiated: My Experience \nI will provide a brief review of my experience working with radiation\, especially internally deposited radioactive material.  My history starts in St. George Utah during the above ground testing of the Atomic Bombs at the Nevada test site.  I was a down-winder and had a first-hand view of the testing.  My MS degree at the University of Utah was directed toward following the movement of radioactive fallout from the A-bomb tests through the environment and into man.  It was on everything and in everything and my concern and fear for my friends\, family and personal health and welfare was high.  I went on to get a Ph.D. Cornell University to study the health effects of radiation with special emphasis on genetic alterations and cancer induction.  Since graduation I have invested my research life trying to understand the effects of radiation\, especially the type of radiation that I was exposed to\, internally deposited radioactive materials.  My extensive experimental research\, analysis and study of radiation has helped me put the risks for low doses of ionizing radiation into a framework where my fears of low doses no longer exists.   I realize that this area is of great importance and that many different opinions exist on the risk and I look forward to having an open and useful discussion on this subject. \n  URL:/event/herbert-m-parker-foundation-lecture-by-dr-antone-l-brooks-irradiated-my-experience/ LOCATION:East Auditorium\, 2710 Crimson Way\, Richland\, WA\, 99354-1671\, United States ORGANIZER;CN="Ken Fincher":MAILTO:ken.fincher@tricity.wsu.edu END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20160408T083000 DTEND;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20160408T163000 DTSTAMP:20260630T204448 CREATED:20160205T031258Z LAST-MODIFIED:20160205T031258Z UID:1738-1460104200-1460133000@tricities.wsu.edu SUMMARY:Cougar Pride Day!
